2010 Academy Award Nominee, Best Animated Feature. Magic, fantasy, and Celtic mythology come together in a riot of color and detail that dazzle the eyes in a sweeping story about the power of imagination and faith to carry humanity through dark times. In a remote medieval outpost of Ireland, young Brendan embarks on a new life of adventure when a celebrated master illuminator arrives from foreign lands carrying a book brimming with secret wisdom and powers. To help complete the magical book, Brendan has to overcome his deepest fears on a dangerous quest that takes him into the enchanted forest where mythical creatures hide. It is here that he meets the falry Aisling, a mysterious young wolf-girl, who helps him along the way. But with the barbarians closing in, will Brendan's determination and artistic vision illuminate the darkness and show that enlightenment is the best fortification against evil?

This is one of, if not the, most amazing animated films I have ever seen! It's hard to describe the feeling I got watching it, the best I can manage is to say that the film is haunting. In this age of digital cracker box films, the classic animated art is even more incredible. In many ways it tells more than the script. After the first twenty minutes my parents left, when they got back from their walk they asked how I liked it ended. I could barely express how incredible it was, but when it came to explaining the plot I got looks like "Really? THAT'S IT?!?". That's how important the visual and auditory presentation is. Don't go into watching this expecting a kids movie, there is a definite chance that your kids won't appreciate it. Instead, this is a masquerading piece of art; watch it and be blown away!

I found the end just a bit lack luster, but the art and everything else are just excellent.
  • Made it through 15 minutes.

I saw this movie, I thought is was going to be good, but it turned out to be slow and bland. I saw 15 minutes of the movie, and decided not to watch anymore of it. The only reason I wanted to see this movie was that the voice of Lovely Carrot from Chloe’s Closet was in it. The animation and music were very good, but the story was bland. Don’t waist your time here!

The Secret of Kells is by far one of the greatest animated films of all time, in my opinion. The characters in this film are very memorable. Brendan Gleeson does a very good job voicing the ruler of Kells and really makes him sound like a complex character. I also really liked the old man character. He was very wise but delivered his messages in exciting ways. Aside from the great characters in this film, what really stands out is the animation. They do sort of a Samuri Jack style animation on the characters. The beauty of the animation comes from the scenery. It looks remarkably beautiful. It can also look very disturbing and frightening. However, if there was none problem with this film, it would be the fact that they don't really explain the whole magic book concept. I just assumed it held all the power in the universe. With great animation and well thought out characters, The Secret of Kells is easily one of the greatest animated films if all time. I give it a 10/10.

this is a movie about growing up and a book that turns darkness into light. the animation takes some getting used to but in the end makes everything a little enchanted. watch when you want to feel like a kid again, or show your kids to teach them about the art of magic and the magic of art
