Description

Welcome to Antarctica - like you've never experienced it. You've seen the extraordinary marine life, the retreating glaciers and, of course, the penguins, but leave it to award-winning, iconoclastic filmmaker Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man, Rescue Dawn) to be the first to explore the South Pole's most fascinating inhabitants...humans. In this one-of-kind documentary, Herzog turns his camera on a group of remarkable individuals, "professional dreamers" who work, play and struggle to survive in a harsh landscape of mesmerizing, otherworldly beauty - perhaps the last frontier on earth.

The perspective of this film is a breath of fresh air. The people in the interviews are full of surprises and it makes you wonder how so many of the realest people have ended up in Antarctica. The landscapes are majestic and the view of animals was fascinating. I recommend this film to anyone with an open mind and curiosity.

Shill Propaganda: Humans have (will) killed the planet. Beautiful cinematography destroyed by moronic narration.

The glorious Herzog takes on Antarctica, totally south of south. His quirky, sometimes profound, sometimes trite, philosophical ruminations pepper the film. We meet the amazing array of scientists and workers, each carrying their own unique story to this oh so frozen world. The natural poetry of some people's comments offers insight into the compelling sensibilities of these men and women who devote their lives to exploration, some, like the neutrino expert, to the tiniest thing known to man. I think it is a wonderful film. Ok, the music seemed a little overwrought to me, but it is so Herzog that you just have to sit back and let it rip. Not your typical tidy travel film---much, much better.

Typically, I love the nature / adventure documentaries, but I fell asleep the first time I watched this, and when I sat down again to watch it before the rental expired and was equally unexcited. Very slow.

There is something magical about a Werner Herzog documentary. Stunning visuals and interesting people throughout this interesting view of life on the edge of the planet. Prime example of how to make a successful documentary.
