HISTORY peels back layers of rock, fills up river canyons, parts the oceans, and levels mountains and volcanoes as How the Earth Was Made goes back in time, from 4.5 billion years ago to today, to reveal the mystery of geology across the world. Spectacular on-location shooting, evidence from geologists in the field, and clear, dramatic graphics combine in this stunning series to show how the immensely powerful, and at times violent, forces of geology have literally shaped the world we live in. From the Siberian Traps to Mt. St. Helens, Death Valley to the Sahara Desert, How the Earth Was Made investigates the fascinating and iconic geological formations that continue to captivate us. Visual effects provide viewers with X-ray vision into how these formations, including Mount Everest and the Grand Canyon, came into being, what they look like inside, and how their layers were added to end up with what we know today.

I love this program. It is not dumbed down, however it does review the points it goes over in detail as to not lose an audience that may be unfamiliar with Geology. I love how this show focuses on a Geological location in the world, explains why it is Geologically interesting, demonstrates what that place tells us about the history of our planet, and correlates what the place in question can tell us about how the Earth was made I am told by a Geologist, that the information is solid however, and I agree that this show is valid and eye opening.

  • the geology is better than the history

The geology section in Season 2 is better than last seasons series. There are clear demonstrations of how geologic processes work. this show makes geology sexy and hopefully young folks will find inspiration to go into this as a field of study. I cannot give this series the four stars I gave last season since there are some glaring inaccuracies in the history stared in the series. John Muir is described as a "sheep herder" by a ranger who should know better. Muir was in fact a mechanical genius who ran a mill in the Yosemite. He had a talent for looking at systems and improving them in every job he took. This talent probably added to his ability to see how the geologic processes worked in the Sierra Nevada mountains. John Marshall discovered gold in Coloma but he did not own the mill. John Sutter owned the mill. A small point but any channel calling itself the "History Channel" should be very careful about the accuracy of its programs. Bodie is not located in Nevada. Is is in fact in California. As a former California parks employee I worked there and know that Nevada did not pay my salary. Since I am from California I know the history of this area. I do not know how accurate the facts are for other places.
