Description

Packed with epic action, Open Range is a powerfully gripping story that's never been told until now, and stars Academy Award winners Robert Duvall (Tender Mercies) and Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves), and Academy Award nominee Annette Bening (American Beauty, Being Julia). A group of free grazers, four men trying to escape their past, are driving cattle and living off the land on the open range -- a place where nature makes the only laws. When a ruthless, evil rancher tries to run them out of town, the men's peaceful existence takes a tumultuous turn and ends in the grittiest, most explosive gunfight on film as two men battle a town for honor, justice, and a way of life that's quickly disappearing.

From the storyline of what the west was like, to the stunning beauty of the region this movie is an awesome testament to the talents of all the actors. Duval and Costner shine !!! This review does not give the movie it's true kudos. Buy or rent...you will watch it many times over and you will not be disappointed!

This movie was made the way they used to make great films. With a great story, and in the end left you feeling better about the world that before you watched it, and walking out wanting the make the world a better place than before you went in. I highly recommend it.

This one usually doesn’t make any of the top ten lists, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a well directed, acted, and shot film. Everything just comes together to make this movie work. The story is a nice, taut western melodrama that is absolutely believable. The acting from the awesome cast is superb. The photography is also excellent. Actually, there is very little NOT to like about this movie of revenge and redemption on the northern plains.
  • Greatest Western Ever Made

This movie is likely the best western ever made and the most overlooked. It is, quite literally, flawless. Kevin Costner politely sidesteps and gives the lead to Robert Duval, and the two - actually their whole cattle drive team - work together to perfection. This movie can boast the best gunfight scene in the genre, but it also has the quaint sentimentality that Westerns should have. It is poetic in a way that life on the edge creates, it's tough and its full of hope. Perfect performances from everyone. Just a superb watch - I purchased it so I could watch it every 6 months or so… I honestly don't think they imagined they were making something so wonderful, which is usually when it happens - this is THE Western for a fan of the genre and a great movie for those that dip in now and again.

Really liked it, not rushed or slow, entire cast was great, one of my favorite westerns
  • Tough Western with a soft touch

Open Range doesn't have a perfect line. The tone switch from brutal hardness to romantic softness occurs in the blink of an eye. But it's probably the best from the Western genre I've seen since Unforgiven (1992). Kevin Costner is believable, hard and soft, and Robert Duvall and Annette Being are perfect for their roles. As a casual fan of Western movies, I can relay there aren't many that add the soft touch added at the end. The action and scenery are also great;. Open Range is A Fistful of Dollars with a Robin Hood ending. Grade: A-.

Must say, Costner does it again. Definitely a good movie, with strong acting, all around. My personal favourite was Annette Bening. Easily worth the investment to watch it.
  • Worst western of all time.

Poorly scripted, poorly acted, slow,... If I would not have been on a plane and needing to fill time I would have deleted halfway through.
