Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) hasn't slept in a year. The shocking deterioration of his physical and mental health has made his every waking moment an unrelenting state of confusion, paranoia, guilt, anxiety and terror. His only solace from this living nightmare comes from an affectionate prostitute (Jennifer Jason Leigh). When cryptic notes turn up mysteriously in his apartment and when hallucinations of a co-worker that no one else sees causes a gruesome machine shop injury, he embarks on a journey to find out whether there is an elaborate plot to drive him mad or his fatigue has simply robbed him of reason. The more he learns, the less he wants to know.

  • Can't argue Bale's acting skill...

but this movie bites. There is a twist at the end, but it simply doesn't all add up. The weight loss is extreme and I often found it to be distracting. As stated, Bale's performance is terrific, as he is a very skilled actor, but the ending is very disappointing. I wanted two hours of my life back after watching it.
  • Dang Bale!

Batman Begins and The Machinist came out on the same year. Wow!
  • Definitely a Hitchcock Feel to it

I thought this movie was great. I wouldn't go so far as to give it 5 stars, but a great movie. If you are a fan of Hitchcock, you will enjoy this movie. This is a movie that you don't see made like this anymore. It's not a movie that just hands you the problem from the start, which is why it's so interesting. You are always guessing as to why this guy,Trevor Reznik (Christian Bale) is slowing losing his mind. This is a great story to watch unfold.
  • Hallucinogenic Trip

I don't write movie reviews to give away the story. Why take away the suspense? But the title of this review will give you a strong hint of what happens in the end. The story is brilliant and a serious mind bender. Watch carefully because everything (and I mean everything) that the main character, Trent Reznik (which is a little to close to NIN frontman Trent Reznor), interacts with, from people to everyday objects, holds significance to the truth which is revealed in the closing scenes. Who is Ivan? Who is Nicholas? Who is Maria? Are they real? See it if you want to find out, because Christian Bale is brilliant as usual. He is truly my favorite actor and he has never disappointed since I first saw him as a child actor in Empire of the Sun. I hope he one day wins the Oscar because I truly think he is one of the best actors of his generation.
  • Loved this movie

WOW!! Christian Bale does an absolutely incredible job on this character. Its almost hard to see how skinny he got for the role but it is worth every dime to buy.
  • Not A Good Movie

Too hard to understand. Terrible plot, this movie makes you want to turn off the TV. I love Christian Bale but this was not the movie for him. If your looking for a thriller like the Prestige, keep looking because this is not the movie for you
  • So so...

As I see it, three stars means there is as much right with a movie as there is wrong. And, that pretty much sums the "Machinist" up. Anderson, an obvious student of Hitchcock, misses the mark with this one. Shorten the run time to one hour and it could pass for a good Rod Serling's "Twilight Zone" TV episode. It was too slow to be entertaining and too predictable to be thought provoking. I'm sorry I bought it but, I'll probably watch it again... go figure!
  • WOW

Christian Bale does some amazing work with not only his acting skills but his physical transformation. This movie is amazing. I would recommend it to anyone who actually loves movies for the art and beauty of the work as a whole- if you are looking for NONSTOP ACTION- yeah, this isn't a movie for you. If you are looking for something to make you think- something to entertain the mind and not the libido- this is it. You will never look at Christian Bale again (And you will forgive him for his stupid voice in The Dark Knight).
  • Well executed film...!

Christian Bale is my favorite actor but besides that, all characters played very well, convincing. Highly recommend this film! A+
