Set in the glamour of the 1950’s post-war London, renowned dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his sister Cyril (Lesley Manville) are at the center of the British fashion, dressing royalty, movie stars, heiresses, socialites, debutants and dames with the distinct style of The House of Woodcock. Women come and go through Woodcock’s life until he comes across a young, strong-willed woman, Alma (Vicky Krieps), who soon becomes a fixture in his life as his muse and lover. Once controlled and planned, he finds his carefully tailored life disrupted by the scariest curse of all…love. And so begins a Gothic Romance of twists, turns and power struggles of “pure, delicious pleasure” (Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian) that is “devilishly funny and luxuriantly sensuous” (Dana Stevens, Slate).

  • Awful

I saw it as a tragicomical story, pathetic in so many ways, celebrating the human misery of confused, untalented characters, with a pretentious life. If just for the visual, well... they are not all that.

Barely made it through. I thought it was gonna be good too. Nope.
  • Boring, Dull

I thougt this was going to be a good movie, nope. Instead it was boring, boring & boring. Kept waiting for something to happen to justify the money paid out for it, nope. And this was Day Lewis's last movie? He should not go out on this. Oh,..... was..... boring.
  • Disappointed

We kept waiting for it to get better but it didn’t. DDLs character was repulsive starting with the removal of her lipstick at dinner. No sympathy for her just confusion as to why she loved him and put up with his controlling, abusive behavior. The sister was the only character we liked and she seemed relegated to the background even though their relationship was clearly a dominant part of his psyche. Don’t waste your money even if you like DDL.
  • Honest But Uncompelling

    By RobMSF
Phantom Thread offers a frightening yet honest insight into how desperately some women need men and the lengths to which they will go to get what they want. But even Daniel Day-Lewis’s mesmerizing performance isn’t enough to save the sterile, confusing plot.
  • Lesley Manville the only good thing

    By 808makena
I thought that I would love this movie and it was a major diappointment. Lesely Manville was terrfiic and tat is the only good thing I can say anout this movie. Take a pass and watch something else.
  • Should be fun-interesting but isn't

    By BerwickReview
It is a sludge through an obsessive man's ideal about love and life. Boring and the visuals-optics aren't as entertaining as one would imagine. The fashion version of Gangs of New York. It is a slow march towards death. Ugh.
  • The fit

A good double bill to “the secretary”. Some people need a little bit of perversion to stay together Very beautifully made and acted
  • Utterly Intoxicating

    By joeokay
The acting (Lewis, Krieps, Manville), the lush overlay of the soundtrack by polymath Jonny Greenwood, the cinematography and direction (PTA), all top-notch, detailed, studied, and well-appointed. A masterwork.
